TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Most of you are familiar with the words of Psalm 33:12, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Well, this Bible verse could be the theme of the entire book of Zechariah, a prophet who preached around the year of 520 BC. During this time the exiled nation of Judah had been allowed to return home.
They had been conquered due to their sin, but now were being given another chance from the Lord. Zechariah calls them to renewed repentance and to put the worship of the Lord as primary in their lives. Then their borders would be secure, and their nation restored. But Zechariah also prophesied doom upon the nation if they followed bad leaders. They would have the same fate as before if they left justice, righteousness, and the worship of the true God of Israel.
But, in our scripture passage today at the end of the book, Zechariah prophesies of a time when God will send a powerful king of righteousness from the line of David. He will triumph over every enemy and ultimately win every battle as king over all the earth. And today we know this king as Jesus Christ our Lord, our Savior, and our soon-coming King!
(Zechariah 14:6-9) 6 On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light.
8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter. 9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.
