In our verse for today, the LORD, through the prophet Isaiah, points to a time when the “Messiah” (the “Anointed One) will come to deliver Israel, save the Gentiles, and transform the world. This Messiah was referred to as a servant whom God would delight in, who would be endued with the Holy Spirit, and who would bring justice to all nations.
Hundreds of years later the long-awaited Messiah would burst upon the scene in the person of Jesus Christ. Many people wanted Jesus to be a military ruler who would overthrow the yoke of Rome, but they forgot about the prophecies that predicted that Jesus would lay aside his power in favor of humble servanthood. Also, in the Bible, Jesus strongly encourages everyone to follow His example to be a servant (Mark 10:42-45). The apostle Paul, in his letter to the church in Galatia, also encourages his brothers in Christ to lay aside their rights and to serve both God and man (Galatians 5:13).
Today, God’s Word still challenges us to reach true greatness by being a servant. We do this through mercy, kindness, hospitality, charity, and love. So…as you read our verse, pray for a specific way you can serve others TODAY in the name of Jesus. Greatness awaits you…SERVE!
“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight. I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.”
