It is important to remember that, those whom God loves, He disciplines. The people of Judah were the Lord’s chosen nation, but despite strong warnings from numerous prophets, they continued to sin against the Lord. This resulted in God using Babylon to besiege Jerusalem, pillage the Temple and ultimately to destroy them both. After killing all of his sons, the Babylonians carried Zedekiah back to their land in further humiliation. By 586 BC the land of Judah was in ruins, their economy was devastated, and their population was in steep decline.
2 Kings 25:11-12
“Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the rest of the populace and those who had deserted to the king of Babylon. But the commander left behind some of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards and fields.”
