“You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” - John 13:13-15
🔍 DISCOVER IT
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus gathered with His disciples for Passover. During this meal, Jesus did something shocking: the Lord of heaven rose from the table, took off his royal garments, wrapped a slave’s towel around His waist, and washed the disciples’ feet one by one. The One they called Teacher and Lord took the position of a servant. Jesus was not just performing an act of kindness; He was giving His disciples (and all believers) a living illustration of humility and love. And in our verses for today, Jesus explains that His actions were an example for them to follow. The Christian life is not about status, recognition, or power. It is about serving others in love. When we humble ourselves and care for others, we reflect the heart of Jesus.
💬 ASK IT
Why do you think the disciples were surprised when Jesus began washing their feet? What does this story teach us about what true leadership looks like?
Jesus said He gave us an example. What are some ways we can “wash feet” for others today? Why is it sometimes difficult to serve others with humility?
How does serving others show the love of Christ to the world?
🧭 LIVE IT
Understand that true greatness is found in humble service. Jesus showed that leadership in God’s kingdom means serving others.
Realize that no act of service is beneath a follower of Christ. If the Lord washed feet, we should never think any act of kindness is too small.
Serving others reflects the heart of Jesus. When we help, encourage, or care for someone in need, we show His love. Look for ways this week to help others without being asked.
🙏 PRAY IT
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to show us what true love and humility look like. Thank You that our Lord and Teacher was willing to serve others, even in the lowest tasks. Help our family to follow His example. Give us humble hearts that look for ways to help and serve the people around us. Teach us to love as Jesus loved, and may our actions point others to Him. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
