THE GREAT COMMISSION
Read it
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen

In the movie Forrest Gump, the title character asked his mother, “What is my destiny?” Believers in Christ know their destiny and mission. It is clearly stated by Jesus in these verses, which are known as, “The Great Commission.” Our mission is to make disciples (followers) of the Lord Jesus Christ. For, in knowing Jesus, we obtain forgiveness, salvation, peace, direction, and heaven. In short, Christ is our everything. And our mission is simple and profound. It is, “to know him and to make him known.”
Ask It
1. Jesus says in verse 18 that, “All authority has been given to me.” How does this awareness give you boldness to fulfill the Great Commission, spreading the Good News of Christ and making disciples?
2. In verse 19, the Lord says to, “make disciples,” to “baptize disciples,” and to “teach disciples” to observe all that Jesus commanded. Take a few moments to describe what you think is meant by each of these phrases.
3. In verse 20, Jesus says, “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” How does the knowledge that Jesus is with you will give you the confidence to embark upon personally fulfilling the Great Commission.”
Live It
1. Know the Great Commission! Become familiar with Jesus’ words in this scripture passage. Be honored that the Lord commissions YOU to help fulfill his plan for others here on earth.
2. Follow the Great Commission! In prayer tell the Lord of your desire to follow his plan and commission for your life. Confess your weaknesses and fears and then boldly accept his authority and presence in our life as you determine to follow his mission to help others to become his disciples.
3. Live the Great Commission! Every day can be a mission adventure. Work with others to plan formal times to share Jesus. And, even in your regular traffic patterns of your life, look for opportunities to share Jesus with your lips and with your life.
Pray It
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of salvation through your Son, Jesus Christ. As I embark on the adventure to follow the Great Commission, I seek your guidance, strength, and wisdom. Please open my eyes to the opportunities around me to share your love and message of salvation. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, empowering me to be a vessel of your peace, compassion, and understanding. Grant me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and to boldly proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. I confess that I am not capable of fulfilling this mission on my own strength, so I surrender fully to you. May your will be done in and through me and help me to stand firm against any challenges or opposition that may arise. I trust in your promises, knowing that you are with me always. Thank you for the privilege of being a co-worker in your kingdom. May my actions and words bring glory to your strong name. Amen.
