A SONG OF COMFORT
Read it
Psalm 16:5-7
Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.
Discover It
Psalm 16 is a song of David written at a time in his life when he needed comfort. Although we do not know the specific situation, he begins this psalm in verse one with a plea for God to keep him safe. Additionally in verse two, David declares that he has nothing good apart from the Lord. And in our focal verses for today (verses five through seven), David’s declares that God alone is his provider, his security, his benefactor, and his counselor, even instructing him in the night hours! How comforting is our Lord!
Ask It
1. In verse five, David describes God as being his provider. Name some of the ways the Lord provides for you.
2. Also in verse five, David describes the Lord as keeping him secure. Name some ways that the Lord protects and guards you.
3. In verse seven, David describes the Lord as being his counselor and instructor. Name some occasions when you heard and responded to God’s counsel and instruction.
Live It
1. Find your comfort in the presence of the Lord. David trusted in God more than family, money, possessions, and earthly power. You should, too!
2. Find your comfort in the word of God. The Bible has been a source of comfort to God’s people down through the ages. Read and claim God’s word for your life each day, and comfort will come!
3. Find your comfort in a future hope. God’s boundary lines fall for you in pleasant places as you trust in Him. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)
Pray It
Thank you, Lord, that you are in control of my life at all times. You are the only true source of my comfort and hope. Yours is the only peace that passes understanding. And you are the only being who can give me that special peace that passes understanding. So, knowing this, help me to always walk in your victory and trust you in every challenge of life that may come my way. And when problems weigh me down, help me to soar above them like an eagle through you! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
