TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Why does the Lord seem so slow in wiping out evil? Why do evil people seem to prosper at the expense of the weak and poor? These were the questions asked by the prophet Habakkuk. The cruel Assyrians had wiped out the Northern Kingdom of Israel. God people had suffered for generations.

But, the Lord assured Habakkuk that He was still at work. Ultimately, he would bring justice and peace to the world. But, until that time, suffering is part of the sinful, fallen world in which we live. So, as you read today realize that you will suffer, Christian or not. You will die, Christian or not. But as a follower of Jesus you suffer for the cause of Jesus Christ, and you die, not in defeat like an unbeliever, but with victory and eternal life as your never-ending destiny.

(Habakkuk 3:17-19)

17 Though the fig tree does not bud

and there are no grapes on the vines,

though the olive crop fails

and the fields produce no food,

though there are no sheep in the pen

and no cattle in the stalls,

18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,

I will be joyful in God my Savior.

19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;

he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,

he enables me to tread on the heights.
