Honesty is a rare commodity in today’s world. Young people lie to their parents about where they are and what they are doing. Old people lie about the distance they walked to school, uphill both ways, and in the snow. Men exaggerate about the size of the fish they caught. Women commit sin when they flatter others about their beauty or fashion sense.
People even attempt to lie to the Lord with sanctimonious prayers and religious platitudes. But not so with David! He was honest with the Lord, sharing his frustrations, sins, and even his complaints with God. As you read today, determine that you will always be, “honest to God!”
Psalm 13
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.
