The apostle Peter wrote this book of the Bible just a few years before the end of his life. In our verses for today, as if knowing that his time on earth was short, there seems to be an urgency about this letter to the Christians of Asia Minor. An urgency to be humble and pliable under God’s mighty hand (knowing that the Lord would lift them up). An urgency to throw all their care upon Jesus (knowing that they would be in His loving care). An urgency to be alert and conscious of the destructive schemes of the devil (knowing that, if we resist the devil, he will flee). An urgency to stand firm with other faithful believers against suffering and persecution (knowing that God’s power will overcome any suffering.
The bottom line is this: Being faithful to God is important! With this in mind, pray that you can be urgent to observe the Lord’s commands. Make it a priority to serve the living God, being humble before Him, be wary of the devil, face trials faithfully, and cast all your care upon the One in whom victory is guaranteed!
1 Peter 5:6-10
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.”
