“Third John'' is a letter written to Gaius, a follower of Jesus who is commended for his faithfulness to the Lord and for his hospitality to his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. This book of the Bible also includes a warning to Gaius about Diotrephes, a contentious person, who is causing problems and disunity with his malicious gossip. John ends his epistle by cautioning Gaius not to get sucked into these evil actions and attitudes.
In our scripture passage for today we are encouraged by John’s words. As you read 3 John 5-8, pray that you can be faithful, helpful, gracious, loving, and hospitable. Then, like Gaius, you will be ready to advance the truth about the life-changing Gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ!
3 John 5-8
“Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for your brothers and sisters, even though they are strangers to you. They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God. It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans. We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.”
