TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

The first king of Israel was named Saul. Outwardly everything in his life said that he should be king. He was young, handsome, and stood a head taller than anyone else. And, he was from Benjamin, the smallest tribe of Israel. This was important so the other tribes would know he would not favor one of the larger tribes to oppress the others. Again, everything outwardly pointed to Saul being a great king. But God does not look upon the outward appearance; He looks at the heart. Saul did not live up to the hopes and dreams of the people. If you read of his life in chapters nine through thirty-one you will see a downward spiral as Saul’s lack of integrity and abandonment of God shipwrecked his life.

(1 Samuel 9) 1 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. 2 Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.
