“I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” - Nehemiah 6:3
🔍 DISCOVER IT
Nehemiah was leading the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall – an enormous, dirty, exhausting job. Brick by brick, section by section, the people worked together to restore what had been broken. But as the work progressed, opposition arose. Enemies tried to distract Nehemiah, calling him away from the task. His response was clear and focused: “I am doing a great work… I cannot come down.” Nehemiah understood that even small distractions could derail a significant mission. The wall wasn’t built in a day – it was built brick by brick, through perseverance, unity, and unwavering focus on God’s calling. In our families and our church, we are also building something – faith, character, love, and legacy. These things don’t appear overnight. They form one decision, one conversation, one act of obedience at a time. Like Nehemiah, we must stay committed to the “great work” God has given us and not allow distractions to pull us away.
💬 ASK IT
What was the “great work” Nehemiah was committed to, and why was it so important?
What are some “bricks” we are laying in our lives right now (spiritual habits, attitudes, priorities)? What kinds of distractions tried to pull Nehemiah away from his work? What distractions do we face today?
Why is it sometimes hard to stay focused on what really matters? How can we encourage each other to stay faithful in the “great work” God has given our family?
🧭 LIVE IT
Great things for God are built slowly, brick by brick, through daily faithfulness. Not every opportunity is from God – some are distractions meant to pull us away from His purpose.
Staying focused on God’s work requires saying “no” to things that may not be wrong but are not right for us.
Every prayer, every act of kindness, every moment spent in God’s Word is another brick in building a strong spiritual foundation. We must remind each other: “We are doing a great work – we cannot come down.”
🙏 PRAY IT
Heavenly Father, thank You for the work You have given our family to do. Help us to see the importance of building our lives according to Your will, one brick at a time. Give us wisdom to recognize distractions and courage to stay focused on what truly matters. Strengthen our commitment to You and to one another. May our home be a place where faith is built, love is practiced, and Your name is honored daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
