📖 READ IT
1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. - Acts 6:1-7 NKJV
🔍 DISCOVER IT
In the early days of the church, growth brought both blessing and challenge. As the number of disciples multiplied, a complaint arose: certain widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. This small logistical issue had the potential to create division and hinder the church’s mission. The apostles responded with wisdom and humility. Rather than ignoring the need or trying to do everything themselves, they appointed Spirit-filled, reputable men to oversee the ministry of serving food. This decision preserved unity, met practical needs, and allowed the Word of God to continue spreading. From this passage, we learn a powerful truth: no act of service is insignificant when it is done for the glory of God. Serving food became a means of changing lives.
💬 ASK IT
Why do you think the complaint about the widows was so serious for the early church? What qualities did the apostles look for in those chosen to serve (Acts 6:3)?
How does this passage show the importance of both spiritual ministry (prayer and the Word) and practical service (serving food)? Can you think of a time when meeting a simple need made a big difference in someone’s life? In what ways can your family and friends serve others in practical, everyday ways?
🧭 LIVE IT
God cares about both spiritual and physical needs. Serving a meal can be just as meaningful as sharing a message when done in Jesus’ name.
Every member of the family can serve. You don’t have to be a leader on a stage to make an impact. Faithfulness in small tasks matters. So, look for simple opportunities this week: delivering a meal, helping a neighbor, encouraging someone who feels overlooked.
Character matters more than position. The early church chose servants who were full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. Who you are is more important than what you do. When everyone does their part, the whole body grows. Acts 6:7 shows that as needs were met and roles were honored, “the word of God spread.”
🙏 PRAY IT
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us that even the simplest acts of service can have eternal impact. Help our family to see needs around us and to respond with willing hearts. Give us wisdom, compassion, and a spirit of unity as we serve others. May we never overlook those who feel forgotten, and may our actions point people to Jesus. Use our hands, our time, and our resources to bless others and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
