WATER INTO WINE

Read it

John 2:7-9

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. (John 2:7-9)

Discover It

Two thousand years ago in the town of Cana in Galilee there was a wedding feast. Guests were sitting around great bowls on the floor with meat stewed in rice or barley. The most honored guests would sit nearest to the bowl for the first serving, all dipping their hands into the steamy mound of meat and grain. Sometimes thin pieces of bread would be folded in spoon-like fashion to help dip up the savory meal. Others sat or stood around waiting for their turn to eat. As each person was satisfied, they then moved to the wall to sit and talk and tell riddles or listen to scriptures or songs being recited. To such a marriage feast, Jesus and his disciples were invited. But then – a problem. The wine had run out. And wedding feasts were the biggest events in the culture back then. To run out of food or drink was scandalous. What would they do? Jesus’ mother knew what to do. Jesus was there. So, in verse 3 when the wine was gone, she simply says to Jesus, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied in verse 4. “My hour has not yet come.” But in verse 5, his mother, knowing the character of her son simply said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Mary knew that Jesus would know what to do.

Ask It

1. Why do you think Jesus supplied more wine to this wedding, even though he said his time of ministry had not yet come?

2. Why do you think Jesus supplied more wine to this wedding in such an unusual and supernatural way?

3. Why do you think Jesus gave the servants a front-row seat to witness this miracle, even when the director of the wedding did not know the source of this new wine?

Live It

1. Take Every Issue to Jesus. Jesus knows what to do in each and every circumstance of life. So, bring everything to him – your shattered dream, your wounded heart, even your broken toys!

2. Do Everything Jesus Tells You to Do. The miracle at Cana of Galilee back then was a miracle of obedience, as the servants followed Jesus’ instructions faithfully. We must do so today as well!

3. Be Ready to Celebrate as Your Servanthood gives you a Front-Row Seat to Witness God’s Miracles! The faithfulness of the servants gave them the opportunity to see God show up and show out! And as we serve today, we get to see the Lord in action as he supplies our every need.

Pray It

Dear Lord, thank you that there is, “Salvation in no other. For there is no other name under heaven, given among men whereby we are saved.” (Acts 4:12). Help me to trust in Jesus first and only for my salvation in heaven and for my sustenance here on earth. Thank you that you supply my every need!
