"Lord, Lord" - Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” (Matthew 7:21-23)

Discover It

Have you ever heard someone say the right words, but their actions didn’t match? Maybe a friend promised to help you, but they never showed up. In Matthew 7:21–23, Jesus talks about people who sound like they know Him—calling Him “Lord, Lord”—but He says He never really knew them. Why? Because they didn’t truly follow Him. This is a wake-up call: God isn’t looking for people who just say the right things—He wants people who live for Him with real, changed hearts. That’s what real faith looks like. It’s not about looking good on the outside—it’s about loving Jesus on the inside, and letting that love change how we live every day.

1. Why do you think Jesus says, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’…”?

2. What’s the difference between knowing about Jesus and really knowing Jesus? How can we tell if someone’s faith is real?

3. Are there ways we sometimes say the right things but forget to live them out? What can we do this week to show we really follow Jesus?

1. Real faith isn’t just about words—it’s about a heart that loves and follows Jesus.

2. Jesus wants more than just church attendance or good behavior—He wants a real relationship with us.

3. Ask yourself: Does my life show that I belong to Jesus? If not, today is a great day to begin following Him for real!

Pray It

Dear Jesus, Thank You for showing us the truth in Your Word. We don’t want to just say the right things—we want to know You and live for You. Help our hearts to be fully Yours. Change us from the inside out so that our words and our actions show that we truly belong to You. In Your name we pray, Amen.
