SIN IN THE CAMP
Read it
Joshua 7:1-26
The Family Group Night devotion for today is an exciting yet sad story from the book of Joshua about a man named Achan and the consequences of his actions. This story teaches us about the seriousness of sin and the importance of obedience to God. And to begin, find a Bible and read (together with your family or friends if possible) Joshua 7:1-26.
Discover It
In this passage, we learn that after the Israelites conquered Jericho, God commanded them not to take any of the devoted things for themselves. However, Achan disobeyed and took some of the spoils, hiding them in his tent. As a result, God's anger burned against Israel, and they were defeated in their next battle against Ai. Joshua sought the Lord's guidance, and God revealed that someone had sinned by taking the devoted things. When Achan's sin was discovered, he and his family faced severe consequences.
Learn It
This story teaches us several important lessons:
Sin Affects the Community: Achan's sin didn't just affect him; it brought trouble upon the entire nation of Israel. Our actions, whether good or bad, impact those around us.
God Sees All: Even when we think we can hide our sins, God sees everything. Nothing is hidden from Him.
Repentance and Consequences: When we sin, we must confess and repent. While God is merciful and forgives, there are often consequences for our actions.
Discuss It
Why do you think Achan's sin affected the entire community of Israel?
Have you ever done something wrong that affected others? How did it make you feel?
What can we learn about God's character from this story?
How can we prevent sin from affecting our family and community?
What steps can we take to make sure we are living in obedience to God?
Pray It
Take a moment to reflect on your own lives. Is there anything you've been hiding or need to confess? Write it down on a piece of paper, and then as a family, pray together, asking God for forgiveness and help to overcome these areas of sin. Afterward, destroy the papers as a symbol of God's forgiveness and your commitment to change.
“Heavenly Father, we thank You for teaching us through Your Word. We are reminded today of the seriousness of sin and the importance of obedience to You. Help us to live lives that honor and please You. Forgive us for the times we have disobeyed and hidden our sins. Give us the strength to confess and turn away from them. Protect our family and community from the consequences of sin. We trust in Your mercy and grace. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”
