A NEW TESTAMENT SPIRITUAL SONG

Read it

Revelation 5:9

Discover It

In the Bible, the early Christians were instructed to sing three kinds of songs: Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. The Psalms they sang were straight out of the Old Testament. We still sing the Psalms today. One example is the kids’ song, “Surely Goodness and Mercy” from Psalm 23.

And we also sing hymns. These are songs about God, teaching and celebrating Biblical truths about Him. One of the most famous is, “Holy, holy, holy…God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!”

And then there are the “Spiritual Songs.” Much like our choruses today, these are songs of worship sung directly to God. “Alleluia” by Bill Gaither is one of the oldest and most famous of these, “Alleluia, Alleluia…Lord, I love You, Lord, I love You.”

And in the Bible, our scripture for today includes the lyrics of a spiritual song that will one day be sung in heaven, “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

Ask It

1. In verse 9, speaking of Jesus, we read these words, “You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals.” This refers to the scroll of the future. How does the Lord knowing the future give His followers comfort?

2. Also, in verse 9 a chorus of creatures and elders sings, “You were slain and with your blood you purchased for God, persons….” How did Jesus’ death on the Cross “purchase” or “buy” us for God?

3. Finally in verse 9 we read that those purchased through Christ’s death will be from, “every tribe and language and people and nation.” Is there anyone whom God cannot save? (Hint: Read John 3:16)

Live It

1. TRUST IN JESUS. He knows and controls the future. You are safe in Him!

2. WORSHIP JESUS. Lift Him up in praise and lower yourself in humility before Him.

3. SING TO JESUS! Verse 13 of Revelation 5 states that, “Every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea,” will one day say, “Worthy to the Lamb!” So, start practicing today! Praise His holy Name!

Pray It

“All my life you have been faithful. All my life you have been so, so good! With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God.” (Lyrics from “Goodness of God” by Jason Ingram, et al).
