A TRANSFIGURATION EXPERIENCE
Matthew 17:1-2
“After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.”
Discover It
Imagine being on a mountaintop with Jesus when something amazing happens: His face shines like the sun, and His clothes become as bright as light! This is what happened to Peter, James, and John when they went up the mountain with Jesus. It was a special moment called the Transfiguration. Jesus’ appearance changed. Also, Moses and Elijah, two important figures from the Old Testament, appeared and talked with Jesus. This moment showed that Jesus was greater than both the Law (represented by Moses) and the prophets (represented by Elijah). Then, God the Father spoke from a bright cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." The Transfiguration gave the disciples a glimpse of Jesus' true nature and His divine glory. This event gave the disciples hope and reassurance, especially because Jesus had just told them about His coming death. The Transfiguration showed that even though Jesus would suffer, His glory would ultimately be revealed.
Ask It
1. In verse one, why do you think Jesus took only Peter, James, and John with Him up the mountain?
2. In verse two, what do you think it would have been like to see Jesus shining so brightly? What does this story teach us about who Jesus really is?
3. Later in verse five, why do you think the voice of God the Father said about Jesus, "Listen to Him"? How can we listen to Jesus today?
Live It
The Transfiguration helps us see Jesus as more than just a man who lived a long time ago. He is the Son of God, and His glory is real. Just as God told the disciples to listen to Jesus, we should listen to Him too. We can do this by reading the Bible, praying, following His teachings, and most of all receiving Him as Lord and Savior. Then, when life gets hard, we can have the assurance that one day we too will see Him face to face in all His splendor.
Pray It
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us the glory of Jesus in the Transfiguration. Help us to remember that He is Your Son and to listen to His words every day. Teach us to trust in Him and to find hope in His power and love, no matter what we go through. We look forward to the day when we will see Him in all His glory. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
