BEING AN EXAMPLE

Read it

1 Thessalonians 1:7-8a

“And so, you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.”

Discover It

You are an example to others whether you want to be or not. You are either a good example or a bad one! And in our scripture for today, the church in the city of Thessalonica exemplified how true believers in Christ should act and think. This church had characteristics that were exemplary not only for the surrounding region of Macedonia, but the whole Roman Empire. Although this was a church troubled by questions, grief, and persecution, even in the midst of all their troubles, they were an example of how believers in Christ should live!.

Ask It

1. In verse seven, Paul wrote that the members of this church were “models” to other believers. A model is one who is an example of a standard set of desirable qualities. In your opinion, what are some of the standard qualities a Christian should have?

2. In verse eight, Paul wrote to this church that the Lord’s message “rang out” from them. What does this imply about their example? How does the example of a Christian resemble a bell ringing?

3. Also, in verse eight, Paul wrote that the faith of this church spread from their local area and had become known everywhere. Their faith was obvious. When people look at your life, how will they know that you have faith in Jesus Christ?

4. What are some specific ways YOU can be an example for Jesus? Discuss these ways and decide on a specific action plan.

Live It

1. People are watching you. You are an example whether you know it or not. So, make sure you are always a good example and not a bad one!

2. Are you troubled and going through challenging times? This gives you an even better opportunity to exemplify the character of Christ. Anyone can be joyful and at peace in good times. But troubles give you the chance to shine for Jesus in even a greater way!

3. So, decide today to be an example. And pray that the Lord gives you opportunities to shine for Jesus Christ each and every day!

Pray It

Dear Lord, help me to never diminish your name by being a bad example of a believer in Christ. Fill me so full of your Spirit, that your character overflows from my life to others. Help me to be an example in constructive speech, wholesome living, demonstrable love, overcoming faith, and God-honoring purity. And though I will always fall short, help me learn from my mistakes and be even a better witness for your grace. Make it my goal to live in accordance with your word and follow Christ’s example. It is in His name that I pray. Amen.
